La Semaine Sainte est l’axe central de l’année liturgique. Achevant les quarante jours du Carême, les chrétiens commémorent le combat du Christ contre le mal et sa mort sur la Croix. Débutant le dimanche des Rameaux, elle s’achève la nuit de Pâques, avant la Résurrection du Christ. Les chrétiens orthodoxes l’appelle la Grande Semaine.
Premier jour…
Le premier jour, appelé dimanche des Rameaux, correspond au retour triomphal à Jérusalem du Christ, venu fêter Pessah (la Pâque juive) et accueilli par ses fidèles qui tiennent des rameaux (des branches) de palmiers.
L’annonce de la trahison de Judas…
Les Lundi, Mardi et Mercredi saints rappellent les derniers instants de la vie de Jésus et évoquent notamment l’annonce de la trahison de Judas, le disciple qui a selon les textes bibliques livré son maître aux grands-prêtres. Le mercredi saint au soir ou le jeudi saint au matin, il est de coutume de célébrer la messe chrismale.
Vendredi saint, la mort de Jésus sur la croix…
Vient ensuite le Vendredi saint, le jour qui rappelle la passion de Jésus, sa mort sur la croix et sa mise au tombeau. Il n’y a pas ce jour-là, à proprement parler, de messe, mais un office, car il n’y a pas de consécration du pain et du vin, ce jour étant celui de la “mort de Dieu” selon la théologie chrétienne.
Il est aussi de coutume de célébrer des chemins de croix, prières qui rappellent, étape par étape, les souffrances de Jésus avant sa crucifixion. En raison de l’épidémie de nouveau coronavirus Covid-19, le Vatican a proposé de reporter ces prières aux 14 et 15 septembre prochains, respectivement fête de “la Croix glorieuse” et de “Notre-Dame-des-Douleurs”.
Samedi saint, jour de deuil…
Le Samedi saint: Le lendemain est jour de deuil. Jésus est mort. Tout semble fini. Celui qui apportait aux hommes l’amour et la paix de Dieu son père a été tué comme un criminel, n’ayant jamais commis aucun péché, selon les croyants. Ceux qui aimaient Jésus sont dans une grande tristesse. Les chrétiens vivent une célébration lors de la veillée, ou Vigile pascale, dans la nuit du Samedi Saint au dimanche de Pâques qui achève la semaine Sainte.
Dimanche de Pâques…
Le Dimanche de Pâques débute là encore le samedi soir, avec la Veillée pascale. Elle commémore à la fois la sortie des Hébreux d’Égypte, comme la Pâque juive (Pessa’h), et la Résurrection de Jésus, qui est le centre de la foi des chrétiens. Ces célébrations se poursuivent avec la grande messe du dimanche, puis durant les 50 jours du Temps pascal.
